The newly inaugurated Akwa Ibom state chairman of the New Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Obong Saviour Enyiekere, has assured all delegates to the National Convention of the party, slated to hold in Abuja on Saturday, May 21, 2016, of a peaceful, free and fair convention.
Speaking to Radar newspaper through his mobile telephone today, Enyiekere who was a two-term council chairman of Ika local government, noted that the Prof. Jerry Gana led faction of the PDP is the authentic PDP, because it is made up of the founding fathers of the party, as well as the ‘who is who’ in the party.
He stated that the faction was formed to correct the anomaly in the party occasioned by the Senator Ali Modu Sheriff led faction.
He faulted the zoning arrangement perfected by the Modu Sheriff faction, saying that it was wrong for the Sheriff’s faction to zone the Board of Trustees’ Chairman to the North; the National Chairman of the party to the North and the 2019 Presidency to the North, while the Southern part of the country was completely marginalised by them.
He asserted that the entire Southern and Northern youths who are members of the party are angry with the Modu Sheriff led PDP and have moved over to the Jerry Gana’s faction, maintaining that the founding fathers of the party decided to step in order to save the party from total collapse.
He explained that several former governors, former ministers, past and serving national assembly members of the party have thrown their weights behind the Gana led PDP, saying that after the Saturday’s National Convention in Abuja, the founding fathers of the PDP in Akwa Ibom would put machinery in place to set-up the party’s structures across the state, beginning from the Wards, Local Government Chapters and to the state working committee.
He dismissed the PDP congresses that were held in the state as lacking the support of the founding fathers of the party, insisting that there is no other PDP in Akwa Ibom state other than the one led by him.
He said that all the founding fathers, leaders and elders of the party in the state have returned to the New PDP led by him in the state, noting that the party will be re-positioned after the Abuja convention in order to prepare for the 2019 elections.
Meanwhile, Justice A. B. Mohammed of the Federal High Court (FCT), Abuja, yesterday, barred the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from conducting elections into 18 national offices at the party’s national convention, slated for Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Saturday.
Delivering a judgement in Chief Emeka Debia V. PDP, in suit number FCT/HC/CV/1443/2016, the judge stated that the tenure of the PDP national secretary and national auditor would expire by December, 2018, while the tenure of the remaining officers would expire on August 30, 2017, with the exception of the national financial secretary and chairman, whose offices were vacant.
Deputy national legal adviser of the PDP, Barrister Bashir Maidugu, who spoke with newsmen on phone, said based on the judgment, the offices where election would not be conducted include that of the deputy national chairman, national treasurer, legal adviser, deputy legal adviser, deputy national treasurer, deputy national auditor, youth leaders, deputy youth leader, national organising secretary, deputy national organising secretary, national women leader, deputy national women leader, deputy financial secretary and deputy national secretary.
He said the tenure of the above officers would expire in 2017, while the national chairman, national secretary, national financial secretary and national auditor were elected in 2014 and their tenure expires in 2019.
“The party should abide by its constitution and guidelines at all times. If something is wrong, they should make it right. Any manipulation will amount to impunity which is the bane of PDP. So there is need for a truce. The judgment is not a surprise to me,” he said.
