The case is The State vs Efiom Abai & 3 others. The first Prosecution Witness (PW1), Mr Gideon Udokor gave a vivid account of the event of March 18 2015, in Nkek village, Ukanafun LGA, where Okon Uwah was brutally beaten to death.
The accused persons are: Efiom Abai, Utip Udo Isip and two others. Pw1 is Uwah’s brother-in-law who hosted the political meeting in his house where Uwah was killed.
Led in evidence by the Assistant Director of Public Prosecutions, Mr Friday Itim, Pw1 narrated how many PDP members, including the four accused persons, arrived his compound where he hosted the APC candidate, Okon Uwah, for a political meeting. “Soon after they arrived, they brought out the poster of a PDP candidate and then threatened that ‘Okon Uwah will not return home alive’.
“They soon broke bottles, punctured Uwah’s car tires and started throwing the empty bottles and broken ones into the crowd. Everyone ran away and Uwah was caught up in the bush where he was beaten to death by the PDP members, including Utip Udo Isip, accused person number 3, who used a bottle to smash Uwah’s head,” PW1 told the court.
The PW1 further gave a vivid account of subsequent events which included taking Uwah to police station and hospital; and the arrival of policemen that night and the arrests of the accused the following day by the police.
The PW1 will be cross examined tomorrow by Mr Ekpenyong Ntekim, the defense counsel.
