The Governor of Akwa Ibom state, Mr Udom Emmanuel, has replied the local press in Akwa Ibom state that he is not a stooge, contrary to several publications in the state based newspapers.
Governor Emmanuel made the assertion while fielding questions from Channels Television Sunrise Daily crew on Friday, May 27, 2016, as part of activities marking his first year in office.
He dismissed insinuations in the state that because he is not fighting with his predecessor, Senator Godswill Akpabio, he is his (Akpabio’s) stooge, saying that fighting with my predecessor will not bring progress to the state.
He asked rhetorically; what have we gained in the past by fighting with our predecessors.
The state chief executive said; “Some of these things you read in the Local Press, we need to also correct that impression. They are expecting us to fight our predecessor and because we don’t do that, they are calling you names like stooge. How can you call someone who has managed finances in the banking sector for 26years a stooge?”
The governor also told the Channels TV team that; “Akwa Ibom government has never touched the local government funds. Not just my administration, even the previous one did not touch it. We don’t even know how they share it. It is only when they have problems that we get to know.”
He added that; “I said this before; some of us are not professional politicians but, professional in politics. I am a professional in politics. I am serving my generation.
“I am not owing workers salaries in my state.
“I came in here with a whole lot of sacrifice.
“I came in to create change while others came in to manage the change created by us.
“My development is not selective. I have not done any development in my village.”
“We are building two mega power sub-stations…we are current enjoying power for a minimum of 18 hours daily,” the governor asserted.
Meanwhile, reactions have continued to trail Mr Emmanuel’s interview especially, in the social media. This paper can report that so far, the greater arguments have been on the governor’s assertion that “Akwa Ibom government has never touched the local government funds. Not just my administration, even the previous one did not touch it. We don’t even know how they share it. It is only when they have problems that we get to know.”
The commentators slammed on the governor, calling him a “liar”, arguing that if his claims were to be true, then, what is the purpose of the Joint Account between the state and the Local Governments in the state.
The online commentators disagreed with the governor’s assertion that he is not a stooge, saying that his actions and inactions speak to the contrary, thereby suggesting that he is a stooge to former Governor Godswill Akpabio.
They also disagreed on his claims on payment workers salaries in the state, noting that both pensioners and civil servants under the state employ are still being owed by his government.
