The timely intervention of Governor Udom Emmanuel in meeting the medical needs of victims of an accident involving supporters of Akwa United has been commended.
Commending the intervention, the State Commissioner for Information and Communications, Mr. Aniekan Umanah said, “It was a magnanimous show of love and demonstration of compassion by the Governor.”
Mr. Umanah recalled that members of the Supporters’ Club were involved in the accident, while on their way to Port Harcourt, capital of River State, to cheer up Akwa United Football Club of Uyo against Eyimba Football Club of Aba in a Week 33 Nigerian Premier League match on Saturday August 28, 2016. One of the victims of the accident passed on.
According to the Commissioner, Governor Udom Emmanuel promptly visited the hospitalized victims on Sunday August 28, at St Athanasius Hospital, Federal Housing Estate, Uyo, where he assured that the State government would bear the medical cost of treating the victims and directed that serious cases be immediately taken to the state owned Ibom Multi-Specialty Hospital, mentioning that one of such was one Mr. Eyibo Ndon Okon, a 48-year old Tipper driver. Mr. Okon sustained injuries to the neck, leading to a cervical fracture and compression of his spinal cord, thus rendering him paralyzed from his shoulders down to his legs.
The expertise at the Specialist Hospital, the Commissioner pointed out, has however changed the story for Mr. Okon, where “Surgeons performed the first surgery, a Laminectomy on C3 – C6, within 24 hours of his admission.” Thus, he was able to move his hands, left leg and also regained sensory touches.
With the successful performance of the second surgery, which involved cervical spine fixation at C4-C8 with system plate and titanium screw, the information boss said “power has been restored to Mr. Okon’s limbs and is currently undergoing physiotherapy before final discharge from the Specialist Hospital.”
He enjoined supporters club of Akwa United to continue to support the club at all times even as he called on all citizens not to relent in their prayers for the success of the Udom Emmanuel administration in the State.
