The Senator representing Akwa Ibom South Senatorial District in the National Assembly, Senator Nelson Effiong has said that his defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) is an attempt as a good leader to lead his people away from the wrong direction to a better and save platform.

Senator Effiong said this last Friday in Oron during a reception ceremony organised by his Eyo Abai community to formally welcome him home from Abuja as a mark of solidarity in support of his defection to APC.

The lawmaker who is a former Speaker of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly during the administration of former Governor Victor Attah said that the current crisis in PDP may lead the party to political oblivion, and is not advisable for any politician who wants to give his people a better direction to remain in a dying party.

In his words; “I have seen some jesters talking about recall, you know the problem with us is that some people are not really vested with what is going on, because your party is in crisis and one decided to move according to the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, which is, what I have done. Every right thinking person in this country knows that PDP is in crisis, and is drifting and going to political oblivion, so it will be foolhardy for me to lead my people astray, so I have to move to the party that is at peace and has charted a good course for itself”.

He further encouraged his people to support him, saying that the hope of Oro people is brighter in APC, because APC, according to him, “stands for fairness, justice and equity, a party where every facet of the country is being given opportunity to realise its destiny, so the party is for the masses and for the realisation of their ambition.

He called on the people of Oro, Eket Senatorial District and Akwa Ibom state to stand firm, and strong and take their destiny in their own hands, and to realise that the state belongs to all, hence, every ethnic composition in the state must be given opportunity to govern. He added that he is ready to lead his people to realise their dreams.

The Senator who was coming for the first time after defecting to APC, also used the opportunity to reel out his achievements in the senate in the past one and half year.

According to him, he has sponsored a Bill for the upgrading of Maritime Academy of Nigeria, Oron, to a University status, which has scaled through the second reading; a Bill on anti-piracy, which is on second reading and a Bill for social security, which is also on second reading, assuring his people that as soon as these Bills scale through the committee stages, he has confident that the President will give the bills a speedy assent.

He also said that work is at advanced stage for the building of one primary health centre each to three local governments in the Senatorial Districts, namely, Oron, Mbo and Eastern Obolo, which he attracted to the area.

Earlier, the Village Head of Eyo Usatai village in Eyo Abasi, Chief Edet Okon Mkpayo welcomed their son and promised the continuous support of the village to the senator, adding that they are proud of their son for taking up the struggle for the upgrading of Maritime Academy of Nigeria, Oron to a University status.
