The National President of Rice Farmers Association of Nigeria (RIFAN), Alhaji Muhammad Aminu Gorongo has inaugurated an Interim State Executive Committee to run the affairs of the State Chapter of the association pending when elections would be conducted into various positions in the chapter.

 

Alhaji Muhammadu, said the decision to put in place the leadership structure for the State Chapter of RIFAN was to accord her the status and capacity to participate and benefit in the RIFAN/CBN Anchor Borrower Programme and other programmes in the agricultural sector, through efficient implementation that would yield food sufficiency, employment generation, wealth creation and economic well being as end products.

 

Co-ordinators were also appointed by the National President to direct rice production activities in the Chapter, organise training workshops for farmers, collate and evaluate produce quality and quantity and disseminate information on opportunities and programmes available as well as the technology trending in the sector to rice farmers at the senatorial, local government and ward levels to give them the capacity to attain large scale rice production.

 

The National President who was represented by the Vice-President ‘Zone 6’ of the association, Mr. Alphonsus Inyang assured members of the association that more coordinators would be appointed as a deliberate policy to reach rice farmers in all the nooks and crannies in the country with information and incentives that would boost their activities.

 

Earlier in a welcome address, the state chairman, RIFAN Akwa Ibom Chapter,

Dr. Emmanuel Bassey had thanked the National leadership of RIFAN in its relentless commitment towards ensuring that rice farmers in the chapter are carried along in the scheme of things. Dr. Bassey commended the National President for constituting a formidable management team to drive the vision of the association in the state, which invariably would generate and sustain the momentum for tackling poverty, unemployment, food insufficiency and economic stagnation through mass production of rice. He promised that the new state executive would do its best to deliver on the mandate.

 

Members of the interim state exco are: Dr. Emmanuel Bassey, chairman; Elder Uduak Jacob, state secretary; Mr. Anthony Umoh, assistant secretary; Elder Sabbath Mathew, organising secretary; Evangelist Otobong Aloysius Umoh, financial secretary; Mr. Bassey Eyoh, publicity secretary; Pastor Udeme Thomas Udo, treasurer; Pastor Udeme Ekah, welfare officer; and Pastor (Mrs.) Susan John, women leader.

 

Others are Pastor Bassey Akpan, youth mobilization; Engr. Ime Udoakah, produce milling and processing; ASP. Joseph Francis Udoh, security; and Sylvanus Peter marketing and price monitoring.

 

The coordinators appointed are: Dr. Emmanuel Bassey, Uyo Senatorial District; Hon. Peter Udom, Ikot Ekpene Senatorial District; and Apostle Victor Nkpoelasojo, Eket Senatorial District.  Apostle Joe Effiong, Mr. Ime Amos and Mr. Nkereuwem Stephen Akpan are coordinators for Ikono, Oruk Anam and Etim Ekpo Local Government Areas respectively. Mr. Alfred Udo Eshiet and Dr. Golden O’Brien are coordinators for Ikot Ekpene and Uruan Local Government Areas accordingly.

 

The state secretary of RIFAN, Elder Uduak Jacob in a vote of thanks expressed gratitude for the recognition and honour done the Chapter and pledged their loyalty to the national body and support for its programmes which are meant to give life and direction to rice cultivation in the country.

The event which held at the Conference Room of Tranquility Hotel, Uyo on Thursday July 19, 2018 was attended by rice farmers from the thirty-one local government areas in the State.
