The Civil Liberties Organisation (CLO), Akwa Ibom State Branch has commended Governor Udom Emmanuel on his swift intervention to address the security challenges faced by students of the University of Uyo.

The female hostels of the Institution had been repeatedly attacked by some unknown gunmen, last week, which led to a peaceful demonstration by some students around the Town Campus of the school, last week.

Responding to the sad incidents, Governor Emmanuel on Sunday, 4th August, 2019, worshipped with the students at the Church on Campus, The Victory Chapel, located within the Institution’s Town Campus, using the occasion to sympathise with the students for the unfortunate incidents, assuring them of their safety, and directed that adequate security be provided within and around the Institution immediately.

Speaking with newsmen in his office on Wednesday, 7th August, 2019, the chairman of the Civil Liberties Organisation, Otuekong Franklyn Isong, while condemning the incidents, applauded the governor’s prompt intervention into the matter, which, according to him, has rekindled the students’ confidence in the Institution and restored normalcy to the institution.

The human rights group noted that “the action of the Governor is an indication that he does not treat security matters with kid-glove.”

The civil society group called on the security agencies in the State to wake up to their responsibilities of protection of life and property of citizens and residents of Akwa Ibom State.
