Spotlight on Gov Emmanuel’s Response to Emergency Situation
By Franklyn Isong
As an advocate of good governance and responsive government, I elect this Sunday, to bring to focus, the swift responses made so far, by Governor Udom Emmanuel to avert what would have resulted into major crises and possible loss of lives and properties in Akwa Ibom State.
On July 10, 2019, ravaging flood rendered some residents of the state in Uyo metropolis homeless. The state governor, Mr Udom Emmanuel, visited the affected victims to sympathis with them. He ordered ministry of Works and other relevant agencies to put remedial measures to reduce flooding in the affected areas of the state, while his government finds lasting solution to the flood challenges in the state, is commendable.
On July 25, 2019, the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly suspended the chairman of Abak Local Government Council, Mr Imo Williams, indefinitely for allegedly ordering his aides to assault a member of the public, whom he owed N75,000 debt since 2017. The incident became public through a video which went viral. The governor condemned it and ordered the House of Assembly to investigate the matter, leading to the embattled chairman’s suspension. This has safe the image of the State.
UniUyo Security Challenge:
July 29, 2019, and August 2, 2019, the female hostels of the University of Uyo, a federal institution in Akwa Ibom State, were attacked twice by unknown gunmen. On Sunday, August 4, 2019, the governor responded by worshipping with the students in the church on campus – Victory Chapel. He used the occasion to sympathise with the victims and gave an on-the-spot directive to security agencies in the state to improve security network in the school. This action,
calmed fray nerves as the students had earlier demonstrated on account of the incidents. Today, normalcy has returned to the institution.
Herdsmen attacked Mkpat Enin community:
On August 8, 2019, Ikot Obio Nso community in Mkpat Enin local government area was attacked by suspected fulani herdsmen. The incident led to loss of life and several injuries to many in the community. On August 9, 2019, the governor promptly responded by sending the Secretary to the State Government, Emmanuel Ekuwem, to sympathise with the victims and people of the community. This has gone a long way to appease the youth of the community who might have intended to carry out reprisal attacks on herdsmen in the state.
Collapse Nung Obong Bridge:
The governor through the commissioner for Works, Mr Ephraim Inyang, had visited the collapse Nung Obong bridge in Nsit Ubium local government area. He promised to do something to ameliorate the suffering of people of the affected area as soon as possible.
Collapse Mbiaso Ikot Ukpong bridge:
While I applaud the governor’s response to emergency situations, I however draw his attention to the unfortunate collapse of Mbiaso Ikot Ukpong iron bridge linking Obot Akara and Ikot Ekpene local governments. With this development, the people of the Mbiaso Ikot Ukpong community have been cut off from Akwa Ibom state except they travel through Nto Edino via Umuahia road. The governor should visit the scene and order immediate action that will provide motorable access road to the community.
With his responsive approach to governance, Udom Emmanuel, is setting a good record for himself and government. And I think, this is a better approach to achieving a people’s oriented government.
A good and people’s oriented government is suppose to be swift in her response to the desires and challanges of the govern.
Any government that does not respond swiftly to the yearnings, expectations and outcry of the people – is that one a government!?
So far, on this, I think Governor Emmanuel has impressed me.
