The Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Udom Emmanuel had while speaking at the 60th birthday anniversary celebration/thanksgiving service of Senator Akon Eyakenyi – the senator representing Akwa Ibom South senatorial district in the Senate, at the Destiny International Mission, Uyo, on Sunday, said; “I don’t have the power to anoint anybody, but my prayer is, ‘God whoever you want to succeed me reveal the person to me so that I don’t waste my time on somebody that will not be.’ Let God show me who to queue behind. I am a mere mortal and I think God will do that. We are combing the whole world looking for help everywhere, so let God see our effort and support what we are doing.”
My understanding is that, the governor wants God to reveal his successor to him on time. This is a good desire which is not too much of him to ask for.
“For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is also dead.” James 2:26. The holy Bible admonishes.
Truly, one cannot underrates the power of God in the affairs of mankind. The governor is an intellectual being. He is well exposed!
My thought is that, it would be a superfluous presumption that the governor does not know his successor five years into office and three years to end of tenure.
I hate to indulge in a risky adventure like embarking on 40 days and 40 nights prayers for God to reveal Udom’s successor to him, when he already has one. God is not the author of confusion. The early governor Emmanuel make up his mind to confront the issue, the better for him. He has less than three years and should make hay while the sun shines.
Believe me when I say that three years is too short a period to start a succession prayer, if indeed, there wasn’t a succession plan prior to this moment.
Apart from good governance, one expects a good leader to think ahead of time, groom his followers and prepare them for leadership positions including his successor.
Akwa Ibom people are prayer warriors, this I can assure the governor. We had already prayed enough for the peace and progress of the state. We seek God’s face on virtually everything we do! But, unfortunately, when God speaks to us, we find it difficult to hear Him.
The Holy scripture says; “God has spoken once; I have heard this twice…” Psalms 62:11.
God will not mention the name of Udom’s successor to him. The signs and signals are everywhere. His successor is sitting next to him. His successor is looking at him smiling. His successor is just watching him.
My only prayer is that God should open the governor’s mind’s eye to see his successor on time. Because he is already behind time, if he didn’t have one.
However, the governor should be mindful of false prophets and their prophecies, while embarking on this prayer adventure.
Assuming Udom has no succession plan, till this day, all the governor needs do, is to do a background check of those aspirants on the race. Ask questions about them one after another, if he doesn’t know them in person. Obtain security reports on them from the relevant security agencies in the state. Check their antecedents, pedigrees, qualifications and capacity to lead the state.
Udom Emmanuel is the supreme spiritual head of the state, I really wish he is not misled into queuing behind the wrong candidate by our “prayer warriors” at the end of his prayer adventure!
