Gov. Udom Emmanuel Commissions Tropicana Mall in Uyo

The Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Mr. Udom Emmanuel, today, led the political class and the business community to commission Tropicana Mall, located within the Ibom Tropicana Complex along Udo Udoma Avenue, Uyo.
Addressing guests at the grand opening, Udom Emmanuel thanked the investors for believing in the Akwa Ibom project and the host communities for their support. He spoke of his administration’s resolve to commence operation of Four Points by Sheraton Hotels which is 99% complete, proposed Tropicana Hotels, Eket International Market as well as create wealth and jobs for the people and leave the state better.
He noted that there were challenges surrounding some projects which included connection to national grid as well as issues of absence of feasibility studies, business case for some of the projects. He also revealed of a proposed USD1.2 billion investment at Ikot Abasi, to transform the future of agriculture in the state.
“My government is not a noise making government. Give me a space and I will give you a market space. Give me a carcass and I will give you Four Points by Sheraton Hotel. I will not allow investments belonging to Akwa Ibom people go down the drain. We will transform it to become value adding.”
Udom described the Tropicana Mall as the new face of business in Akwa Ibom state stating that it is no different from it obtainable in Europe and elsewhere. He said the project will help develop local businessmen, create jobs and wealth.
“We thank the investors for accepting to do business with us. We also thank them for providing space for indigenous retail chain. We want to develop local business here. We came to create change and not manage it. What we have here is not different from what we have in Europe and elsewhere. By the time we are done with Eket international Market, it will complement what we have here. No more shopping in Dubai”.
Udom noted that his legs are on the throttle of development firing from all cylinders until completion agenda is achieved.
In his opening remarks, the Commissioner for Trade and Investment, Prince Ukpong Akpabio, thanked the Governor for exhibiting patriotism of development over politics.
Prince Ukpong said, “Your Excellency, you did not turn a blind eye to projects not initiated by you. You have exhibited patriotism of development over politics. Thank you for birthing Tropicana Mall. This Mall is in a class of its own; it will challenge our people to do business the global way and experience Dubia and other world class shopping mall elsewhere in the world”.
The Tropicana Mall whose remodeling ground breaking exercise took place in 2015, is a Public-Private-Partnership business model where the investors have 75% and the state government having 25%. It sits on an 18, 249sqm space with 75 shops; leasable space of 10, 882 on the ground floor and 2363sqm on the top floor.
The mall will offer services ranging from entertainment, leisure, recreation, food and beverages, electronics and computers, groceries and sundry, fashion and health, etc. It presently provides direct employment for 600 Akwa Ibom persons and 2500 indirect jobs along the value chain.
