It is not yet uhuru for the Paramount Ruler of Okobo local government area, Edidem Ita Okokon as two Okobo indigenes have petitioned the Akwa Ibom State Commissioner of Police, alleging that he was using his position to cover up alleged criminals in Okobo.

The petition titled, “Report of a case of kidnapping against Chief Nyong Akpa of Eyonku, Okobo local government area,” and dated, 3rd June, 2021 was signed by Mr. Okon Asukwo Okon and Mr. Passover Asukwo Ekong.

They said that on the 13th October, 2018 they lodged a report in the Police headquarters against Mr. Nyong Akpa, whom, they alleged kidnapped them. According to them, the matter was assigned and the suspect was arrested and detained but the Paramount Ruler secured his release, promising to resolve the matter. They noted that the Paramount Ruler has not resolved the matter and is using his position to oppress the course of justice.

They complained that the Paramount Ruler allegedly collected N30,000.00 from the suspect after securing his bail from the Police.

They also alleged that the Paramount Ruler used his position to cover up criminals who broke into the Eastern Okobo High School and stole 8 pieces of computers from the school.

Meanwhile, the Paramount Ruler of Okobo, Edidem Ita Okokon, has reacted to the allegations. He told Radar Newspaper that he got involved in the case by securing the bail of the suspect, Mr Nyong Akpa, from the Police custody.

He stated that he thought the matter was a communal dispute between Obufi and Eyonku communities in Okobo.

He informed our reporter that the IPO of the matter invited him to the police headquarters on Tuesday, 22nd June, 2021 and was asked to return on Monday with the suspect, whom, he said was sick. He said on Monday, if the health of the suspect has not improved, he will have no option than to take the IPO to the residence of the suspect for the IPO to see him.

On the Eastern Okobo High School incident, Edidem Okokon told our reporter that he was informed of the crime by the then Okobo Divisional Police Officer. He said that he recovered all the stolen computers and returned same to the Okobo Divisional Police Officer who commended his efforts in recovering the computers. He told our reporter that the incident was committed by some students of the school who had ran away from the local government area to Cross River State and Cameroon.
