The Civil Liberties Organisation (CLO), Akwa Ibom State Branch has lauded the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria on the passage of a Bill to upgrade the Maritime Academy of Nigeria, Oron, to a University for Maritime Studies on Wednesday, 7th July, 2021.
The commendation was made by the Chairman of the organisation, Otuekong Franklyn Isong, while reacting to the passage of the Bill, in Uyo, on Thursday, 8th July, 2021.
Comrade Isong who noted that the Bill was the first Bill sponsored by the Senator representing Akwa Ibom South senatorial district in the Senate, Senator Akon Eyakenyi, in 2019, commended Senator Eyakenyi for ensuring its passage by members of the Senate against all odds.
The CLO boss explained that Akwa Ibom people and Nigerians will benefit greatly from opportunities that will come with the new institution, saying that the University will offer courses in specialised international shipping, waterways transportation, port operations and management as well as exploitation and exploration of oil and gas to boost the country’s economy.
