CLO PRESS RELEASE

VOTE INDIVIDUALS NOT PARTY IN 2023 – CLO CHARGES NIGERIAN WORKERS

The Civil Liberties Organisation (CLO), Akwa Ibom State Branch on Wednesday, 7th September, 2022 urged Nigerian workers to get their permanent voter’s cards and be ready to exercise their rights at the ballots by voting good leaders in 2023.

The pro-democracy organisation made the call through its State Chairman, Otuekong Franklyn Isong, while delivering a goodwill message at the 2022 Labour Political Converge tagged: “Workers and Effective Political Participation for Good Governance,” at the Workers Solidarity Centre, Atan Offot, Uyo.

The CLO boss commended the Nigeria Labour Congress in Akwa Ibom State for organising the converge and for setting up the Labour Political Committee with members drawn from the 31 local government areas of Akwa Ibom State.

He saluted the thoughtfulness of the NLC leadership, stating that the role of the Nigerian workers in achieving effective and good governance cannot be over-emphasised.

He urged the Nigerian workers to vote rightly according to their consciences in the 2023 general elections. He urged workers to desist from voting according to political party lines, if the country must make progress.

He noted that the politics of political parties has failed Nigerians and was partly responsible for the leadership failure in the country since, according to Isong, the political parties usually imposed persons with little or no idea of governance on the people at all levels of government thereby subjecting the people post elections to perpetual abject poverty and untold suffering since the advent of democracy in 1999.

He opined that in 2023, Nigerian workers should vote individuals who must have been screened and scrutinised by the people through public fora like debates, et cetera, in order to ensure that only people with good track record and reputable pedigree with the capacity, competence and ability to offer good governance in Akwa Ibom State and in Nigeria are voted into power.

Earlier, the Chairperson of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Akwa Ibom State Chapter, Comrade Sunny James, had while welcoming everyone to the occasion, stressed the importance of the converge.

The NLC Chairperson inaugurated the Labour Political Committee, charging the members to serve as the bridge between the politicians and the workers in the State.

The occasion was chaired by a renowned university Don, Prof. Des Wilson, while Dr. Harry Udoh delivered the keynote address.

Some dignitaries at the event included the Commissioner for Labour and Manpower Planning, Hon. Aniefiok Nkom; and the Special Adviser to the Governor on Political Matters.

Others were the representatives of the All Progressives Congress, African Democratic Party, Labour Party and Accord Party.

Signed

Comrade (Barr) Christopher Ekpo
State Secretary of CLO.
