AKSG admonishes senior citizens
The State Commissioner for Finance, Mr. Akan Okon has urged senior citizens of the State to see themselves as veritable partners in the formulation and implementation of cardinal policies that will enhance the State’s development.
The Commissioner who was speaking in Uyo on Friday when members of Akwa Ibom Elderly Citizens Assembly (AKECA) called on him in his office ,said senior citizens possess knowledge and experience which are indispensable tool to enrich government’s policies that will foster unity, peace and progress of the State.
Mr. Akan Okon who opined that elders form the integral part of transformation of any society in view of their endowed words of wisdom, added that Akwa Ibom State stands to gain from their wise counsels, and called on them to step forward to put their opinions and views at the disposal of their respective authorities and the State in general.
He expressed delight at the pedigree of members of AKECA whom he noted were seasoned technocrats and professionals in different fields of endeavors who played strategic roles while in active service, adding that as sectorial experts and public policy think-tank, government would like to tap from their wealth of experience to add value to governance.
The Finance Commissioner commended them for coming together under one umbrella to advance Akwa Ibom interest, appealing to them not to relent in the crusade on the revival of societal values and ethics especially among the youths to rid the society of moral decadence.
He promised to extend their good will message to the State Governor, and assured that he was open to them when the need arises, while also pledging his support to the association.
Earlier, the President of AKECA, Obong Ememobong Essien stated that their visit was to intimate the Finance Commissioner of their existence to see how they could collaborate with State government to move Akwa Ibom forward.
Obong Essien who spoke through the secretary of the union, said the body comprises men and women who are sixty years and above with common interest of working for the progress of the State.
He prayed for the well being of Governor Udom Emmanuel’s administration,while also soliciting the support of the State government to enable them realize their set goals and objectives.
