It was a black Wednesday in Uyo as trigger-happy official of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC) murdered a twenty-six year old employee of Dompec Global Resources, an Uyo based beverages distribution
The officer, who is on the run, mounted a stop-and-search operation with his colleagues along Ikot Ekpene Road in the metropolis when the tragic incident occurred.
Our reporter gathered that upon sighting the delivery van with registration number, XC 225UYY, the NSCDC team flagged down the van and as the driver wanted to park properly, one of them reportedly opened fire on the van, killing one of the occupants. They were four in the van. The deceased name was given as Chukwuma John. He was from Ebonyi State.
Realizing the consequence of their action, the NSCDC team took to their heels. The deceased colleagues, however, alerted passersby who promptly called the attention of police officers. The van was later driven to the NSCDC office at Ekpanya Street by one of the occupants as he struggled to come to terms with the sudden demise of his colleague.
At their head office, some NSCDC officials tried to prevent journalists from taking snapshots of the corpse which was yet to be removed from the vehicle as at 5:30pm when journalists left. He was lying in the pool of his own blood. It was a moving scene as passersby watched in utter shock.
Speaking, the NSCDC Commandant, Obiajulu Obiageli, expressed sadness over the incidence and assured that the culprit will be fished out and brought to book.
She told journalists that she has already dispatched a team to apprehend the killer cop.
On his part, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Dompec Global Resources, Deacon Daniel Chukwuma, said he is absolutely destabilized by the incidence. He described the departed as a very humble young man who was very dedicated in his service to the company.
Mr. Chukwuma noted that the demise of his driver is hard to take considering the circumstances of his deathasked what he was going to tell the family of the deceased, he was mute, stressing that he is still in shock.
While calling on the NSCDC and other security agencies to unravel the whereabouts of the trigger-happy official, he promised to seek redress in court.
The Legal Consultant of the Company (Dompec Global Resources), Barr. Fidelis Amaechi described the incident as
inhuman and a gross abuse of arms by the runaway official.
He stated that the matter is a serious case and will be treated as such.
He condemned the gory act in totality, noting that the full weight of the law must take its course.
He wondered why someone will behave in such a manner, adding that cutting down the deceased in
such circumstance is unacceptable.
Meanwhile, some prominent Igbo leaders in the state were at the scene to show support and solidarity to one of their own.
They vowed to get to the root of the matter.Officials of the NSCDC have been in the news recently for killing innocent Nigerians with reckless abandon. It could be recalled that the federal government controversially approved arms for operatives of the agency in 2012, an action many believe did not follow due process as according to them, the officials were not properly trained.
