Heavily armed policemen have sealed off the Wadata Plaza national secretariat of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Abuja.
According to Vanguard, five police vehicles, comprising two trucks and two pick up vans, Sunday evening, blocked access on both end of the street directly in front of the secretariat. A detachment of policemen also blocked the entry into the secretariat.
The lock down is believed to be as a result of the controversy arising from a parallel national convention conducted in Abuja by a faction of the party called the PDP Concerned Stakeholders on Saturday. The faction purported to remove acting chairman of the party, Alhaji Ali Modu Sheriff and replace him with Prof Jerry Gana and former Senate President Ibrahim Mantu as co-chairmen.
On the same day in Port-Harcourt, capital of Rivers state where the PDP faction hitherto believed to be loyal to Sheriff held its convention, former governor Ahmed Shinkafi was announced as chairman of a caretaker committee that replaced a national executive committee led by Sheriff that was announced as having been disbanded.
Sheriff had before then told newsmen that the convention was cancelled. Reports however emerged that he only made the announcement on discovering that he was about to be removed at the convention.
